Manorlands 1940s Garden Party

Manorlands Hospice is preparing for its annual garden party on Sunday 8th July 2012. In its 38th year the organisers have decided to revisit the 1940 roots of the founder of the hospice, Lady Ryder. Lady Ryder was born in Yorkshire and during the 1940s she outworked her passion for helping people by nursing soldiers and helping prisoners of war. It was the compassion she developed in the 1940s that led her to establish the Sue Ryder Charity, which now runs fourteen care centres throughout the UK including Manorlands Hospice in Oxenhope.

Event organiser Richard Martin said “Lady Ryder’s impact on the Keighley area has been huge. Every year Manorlands Hospice helps over 600 local people who are living with life threatening illnesses and this is achieved through the generosity of the community. When thinking of this years garden party we wanted to follow a 1940’s theme to honour the great founder, Lady Ryder. The 1940s for her were very crucial in developing her vision for helping people, and what better way to celebrate this than allowing people to re-create a 1940s world on the grounds of Manorlands.”

On the day there will be over 30 stalls including old favourites such as linens, books, cakes, home produce, jewellery, white elephant, greetings cards, the Barclays Bank tombola and art gallery. There will be live performances from some original 1940s land girls and also various 1940s memorabilia will be placed throughout the grounds.

Last year the garden party raised over £17,000 - all of which went directly to helping the Manorlands Hospice. This year organisers are looking for people to donate any of the following items: new goods, bric-a-brac, plants, cakes, raffle and tombola prizes. If you are able to donate or help on the day please contact Richard Martin on UK 01535 640441 or email: richard.martin@sueryder.org
