The Ribble Valley
Downstream of Settle (and what is known as Ribblesdale) the River Ribble crosses the Aire Gap) and then cuts between the dark mass of Pendle Hill with Pendle Witch Country to the south and the uplands and moors of Bowland to the north.
Places in the valley include Clitheroe, Gisburn and the village of Ribchester (which was the site of a Roman fort).
Further west the valley opens out as the river wends its way on to Preston, the Ribble estuary, and in to the Irish Sea.
