Big crowds attend Bronte Birthplace preview event

Crowds queuing outside the Bronte Birthplace Stone fireplace

On 21st April 2024 - the 208th anniversary of Charlotte Bronte's birth - the Bronte Birthplace in Thornton village opened its doors to the public for a special preview event prior to restoration and refurbishment work which has been planned to take place through the course of the coming year.

Having been announced previously on social media the event was extremely well attended, with crowds queuing down the street in fine and sunny spring weather (pictured above left) to wait their turn to get a look inside this extremely important building. Once inside, visitors could attend a talk about the Brontes and their time in Thornton as well as view the actual original fireplace (pictured above right) in front of which it is said the three famous literary sisters (including Charlotte - exactly two hundred and eight years before to the day!) along with their brother Branwell were born.

The property, which has recently been acquired by Bronte Birthplace Limited with support from Bradford 2025 was prior to the COVID pandemedic being run as a continental style coffee house and bistro which called "Emily's". Once repurposed, the building is scheduled for an official reopening in 2025 timed to coincide with the launch of Bradford's tenure as that year's designated UK Capital of Culture.
