The Halifax Gibbet
The Halifax Gibbet was a decapitating machine or "engine" which was used to behead convicted felons in the West Yorkshire town of Halifax, pre-dating the similar "guillotine" as advocated (but not invented) by Dr. Guillotin as a humane method of capital punishment and used in the French revolution.
A replica of this gruesome device is situated at its original location near Gibbet Street, while the blade from the original machine can be seen in a local museum.
